Ford Presents Explorer Police Interceptor Utility

After the company introduced the Police Interceptor saloon this spring, it is now time for the Explorer crossover to wear a law enforcement uniform.

The 2011 Police Interceptor Utility, as the automotive officer is called, is powered by a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 unit that produces 280 hp (the output might be higher) and is E85-capable. The powerplant uses a six-speed automatic gearbox. The vehicle can come with front or all-wheel-drive.

The car comes with rugged tech features, such as high-performance brakes, a heavy-duty alternator and a generous radiator and rides on vented 18-inch wheels.

The Police-special interior features include special front seats that use smaller side parts to accommodate officers’ utility belts. The shifter is now situated on the steering columns, as the center console comes packed with specific electronic toys. The front and the rear compartment are separated by special stab plates that protect the officers, while the rear-seat passengers get a dedicated climate control system. The steering wheel comes with special controls for sirens and other police equipment.

The car is packed with technology that is aimed at increasing safety and offering high-tech functions. We are talking about systems like Curve Control, Safety Canopy side-curtain airbag, a rear view camera, AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control and Sync.

The Police Interceptor Utility will share its production site with the sedan (Chicago plant), with the first units of the vehicle coming to the world late next year.
